president qiu yong pointed out it’s important that the forum focus on the future of city and sustainable development. the symbiotic synergy of modern megacity and industrial civilization, as well as the aggregation of mass production and consumption, the high-density development, are the core reasons for exacerbating the crisis of unsustainable development. as the center of economic and social activities, city has a significant impact on human’s lifestyle and the mode of production. in one sense, only when cities are on the path of sustainable development, can there be sustainable development in the country and even the whole world. tsinghua university has been actively involved in implementing the un 2030 agenda for sustainable development, and carried out related projects including talent training, scientific research and knowledge exchange activity. tsinghua will keep contributing to the global sustainable development movement.

qiu baoxing indicated that urban planning is the key to implement healthy urbanization. to illustrate the development of chinese experience of urbanization, qiu pointed out the five basic principles: “harmonious development of large, medium and small cities and small towns; complementary and coordinated development of urban and rural areas; compact density urban spatial structure; prevention of ghost town formation; and protection of cultural and natural heritage”. he used locomotive as a metaphor of urbanization, and urban planning is the track. only when the track is well designed, precise, and correctly orientated, can urbanization development healthily.
the plenary session “the next civilized city as a project of planned creation” focused on the two major issues: how to create a new civilized city? and who will take the lead? this session was moderated by dr. jung jae-seung, the professor of bio and brain engineering at kaist. several prominent speakers, including the former south korean ambassador to the united states and former president of south korea joongang daily hong seok-hyun, the former professor of party school of the central committee of the communist party of china zhao huji, the president of postech kim doh-yeon, the chairman of board of directors of china green fund and former director of the ndrc urban and small town reform and development center xu lin attended the session and delivered speeches.

xu lin gave a speech entitled “open and inclusive urban governance and urban innovation ability”. he indicated that cities must be innovative and inclusive, promote construction and planning of smart city, and assist city leaders to better manage public security and environment issues. at the same time, he emphasized the importance of diversifying talent, and encouraged cities to improve the quality of service, r&d investment, and innovation of the ecological environment to create cities with ecological quality that attract more innovative talents and high-tech industries. finally, he stated the possibility of construction and planning next civilized city according to the concept of ecological civilization.

in the “the digital era and the next civilized city” plenary session, the panelist focused on the opportunities and challenges of employment, health care, education and manufacture that brought by digitalization. this session was moderated by professor zhu xufeng, the associate dean of sppm and executive director of tusdg. professor arun sundararajan from new york university, director yu shijie from ministry of education research center for online eduation, professor hong yoon-chul from seoul national university, mayor zhang dehua from yuxi municipal government, and professor son myung-se from yonsei university spoke in the session and had a wonderful discussion.

at the beginning of the session, mr. jack ma, the co-founder and executive chairman of the alibaba group, gave a speech through video recording. he emphasized that managing a city is very complex, but with the help of big data, we can equip the city with a “brain” to enable complicated urban operation, and promote the multi-target sustainable development of cities.
yu shijie introduced chinese practice and exploration of education in digital era, including the establishment of the ministry of education research center for online education to spread the philosophy and experience of online education, and set up an online education research fund to encourage universities to conduct educational reform research. in addition, xuetangx was founded to share quality education resources from tsinghua and global with students nationwide using the blending learning approach.
zhang dehua shared his insight about the influence and experience of the digital age on urban development in yuxi city: yuxi pioneered the development philosophy and practice guidelines of “planning-led construction of the city; innovation-driven revitalization of the city; ecological protection and education of the city; and intelligent governance of the city”on promoting sustainable urban development, and exploration & practice of industrialization and digitalization.

wu hongbo mentioned that implementation of urban sustainable development is a systematic project that requires policy coordination among various government departments, from the perspectives of urban function and land use planning, reasonable design of urban space, reducing of urban population density, enhancing population quality, improving energy structure and municipal water cycle system, and refining the material recycling system.

vice president of tsinghua university yang bin gave an opening speech. he pointed out that the city is not only an aggregation for human to reside, work, learn and live, but also a microcosm of the three major sustainable development challenges - economy, society and the environment. city is an important starting point for the future implementation of the un 2030 agenda. he hoped that the discussion of this forum would further explore and strengthen the relationship between “city” and “sustainable development goals”, and seek effective actions to promote “sustainable urban development”. so that the agenda will be gradually incorporated into future city planning globally, and each country will provide policy recommendations to decision makers about implementation the 2030 agenda.

the blueprint for sustainable urban development needs not only urban leaders and policy makers to portray, but we also need young people’s definition and imagination. yeosijae institute and tusdg co-organized a ceremony for "2018 future city idea competition” to award the winning teams from china and south korea, and to encourage more young people to pay attention to the future sustainable development of cities.
2018 future city idea competition focuses on the novelty of urban creativity. the future city series competition will be held in the near future as well. president kim doh-yeon of postech announced the “2019 asia future city technologies (afct) competition”. by taking technology and application services as the research subject, the competition will provide technical support for future research of urban sustainability.

to further promote sustainable development in cities, ban ki moon centre for global citizens, yeosijae future consensus institute, and school of public policy and management of tsinghua university jointly signed an mou (memorandum of understanding). former under-secretary-general of the un and board member of ban ki moon centre for global citizens kim won-soo, president of yeosijae future consensus institute lee kwang-jae, and associate dean of school of public policy and management of tsinghua university zhu xufeng signed a cooperation agreement on behalf of the three organizations. it laid an important foundation to develop research, talent training and academic exchange for sustainable urban development for the future.

‘meet sdgs’ high-end forum was moderated by the former un under-secretary-general, co-director of tusdg, wu hongbo. during the speech, mr. ban ki-moon shared his journey from dreaming of being a diplomat and national leader to becoming the eighth un secretary-general. he encouraged every tsinghua student to dare to dream and pursue their dreams, broaden their horizons and enhance their global vision, and actively involve and solve the challenges facing humanity. from the “paris agreement” that prevent global temperature rise more than 1.5 degrees to the first global consensus in human history - the “un 2030 agenda for sustainable development”, mr. ban kim-moon has devoted tremendous efforts and endeavor to solve the problem of unsustainable development during his term of office as the un secretary-general. in the end, mr. ban asked every tsinghua student to develop a sense of “global citizenship” and to build a sustainable future for humanity with a sense of mission and ethical responsibility.
