1. title: toward a typology of critical nonprofit studies: a literature review
authors: tracey m. coule, jennifer dodge, angela m. eikenberry
abstract: this review examines scholarship in key nonprofit journals over four decades. its purpose is to (a) analyze the extent, nature, and contribution of critical nonprofit scholarship and its trajectory over time and (b) call on scholars, research institutions, and journals in the field to engage the kinds of insights these increasingly marginalized approaches bring, providing space for them to join, challenge, and shape the research conversation. findings show only 4% of articles published within the period examined adopt critical approaches, with great variability in the ways articles exemplify core tenets of critical scholarship, and a general dampening of critical work over time. this conservatism may result from the rejection of less understood philosophies and methodologies of critical inquiry in favor of more mainstream (positivistic) models of social science. our primary contribution is to advance a typology explicating the pluralism inherent in critical approaches to nonprofit studies, and their strengths and limitations.
2. title: nonprofit segregation: the exclusion and impact of white nonprofit networks
authors: stephen danley, brandi blessett
abstract: nonprofits in cities often exist in segregated contexts in which leadership in high-capacity nonprofits reflects the whiteness of surrounding suburbs while leadership in grassroots nonprofits reflects the makeup of residency (low-income people of color). we build upon a small but burgeoning literature that uses critical race theory to better understand whiteness and segregation in the nonprofit sector. using ethnographic data in camden, new jersey (nj), we identify three key emergent findings on the impact of a segregated nonprofit sector: (a) the sectors segregation reflects regional, residential segregation; (b) white, suburban overrepresentation in high-capacity nonprofits leads to a defense of white, suburban interests; and (c) these dynamics contribute to economic segregation within the sector. in our conclusion, we lay out a wider theoretical discussion of how these factors are interrelated.
3. title: informal volunteering, inequality, and illegitimacy
authors: jon dean
abstract: this article argues that informal volunteering (the unstructured giving of ones time to help friends, neighbors, or community) has been ignored or understudied within research and policy. with data frequently showing higher rates of informal volunteering among women, people of color, working-class communities, and other often discriminated against groups and qualitative research demonstrating the value of informal volunteering within poorer communities, such positioning serves to reproduce dominant narratives around volunteering, reinforcing social inequalities. using bourdieusian critical theory from largely u.k.-based working-class feminist scholars, this article contributes to the nonprofit literature by showing how such a formulation adds to the legitimacy of middle-class cultures and delegitimizes working-class ones, especially at the current neoliberal conjuncture where volunteering experiences are encouraged to be used as a tool of distinction and employability. however, the article cautions against conceptualizing informal volunteering within existing formal volunteering frameworks, as doing so may further hollow out community life.
4. title: project-think and the fragmentation and defragmentation of civil society in egypt, palestine, and turkey
authors: gizem zencirci, catherine e. herrold
abstract: by drawing from authors fieldwork in egypt, palestine, and turkey, this article critically examines perceptions of project-think among civic organizations in the middle east. as a managerial rationality, project-think has four key components: (a) a prioritization of discrete needs and discrete groups, (b) an orientation toward funding, (c) a focus on short-term and measurable results, and (d) the positioning of nongovernmental organizations (ngos) as career ladders. through unpacking these four components, we find that project-think is perceived to contribute to the fragmentation of civil society by fracturing social issues, dividing the ngo sector, isolating organizational energy, and complicating relations between groups. simultaneously, we demonstrate that, civic actors use various strategies to circumvent the perceived impacts of fragmentation. by mapping these intertwined meanings and experiences of fragmentation and defragmentation, this study contributes to debates concerning the political effects of managerialism among civil society in the global south.
5. title: where my gays at? the status of lgbtq people and queer theory in nonprofit research
authors: seth j. meyer, elizabeth j. dale, kareem k. m. willis
abstract: this article critically examines academic scholarship in the field of nonprofit studies that pertains to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (lgbtq) people and issues. we introduce the key tenets of queer theory, a critical theory which encourages questioning social constructs, to nonprofit studies as a lens through which to examine the nonprofit sector. using a queer approach, we analyze the past research on lgbtq issues along the continuums of whether the research subjects are active or passive participants, and whether the focus on lgbtq issues is ancillary or central. we find a minority of articles, most written between 2015 and 2019, which position lgbtq people as central and active participants in the research. we conclude by providing a research agenda for how queer theory can be applied to the nonprofit sector and argue that placing lgbtq people and organizations as central constituencies in nonprofit research will facilitate social change.
6. title: mapping civil society in the digital age: critical reflections from a project based in the global south
authors: megan lepere-schloop, susan appe, peter adjei-bamfo, sandy zook, justice n. bawole
abstract: initiatives to map nonprofit organizations encompass efforts to define the boundaries of the sector and understand its scope and scale. as new technologies make it possible to digitize and analyze information in new ways, further questions about mapping civil society emerge. we integrate nonprofit scholarship, critical work on computational methods, and reflection on our experiences using machine learning to map nongovernmental organizations in ghana, to develop a critical framework for mapping civil society in the digital age. the issues we raise about computational methods are embedded within greater concerns about the taken-for-granted assumptions in mapping civil society, and mapping as a tool to control, manage, and manipulate civil society. we are particularly attentive to the power within mapping as a mode of knowledge production.
7. title: ngo roles and anticipated outcomes in environmental participatory processes: a typology
authors: itay greenspan, galit cohen-blankshtain, yinnon geva
abstract: despite the plethora of research on environmental participatory processes, the forms of nongovernmental organization (ngo) involvement in these processes, and the influence of their involvement on participation outcomes, are still under-conceptualized. this article aims to develop a conceptual typology for ngo roles in environmental participatory processes and to suggest how these roles might be associated with participation outcomes. following a review of public participation literature and ngo capacities, we present four prototypes of ngo roles along two axes: orientation axis and nature of involvement axis. the prototypes include entrepreneur, service-provider, enabler, and partner. we then offer an empirical illustration of the typology using eight case studies across the globe and discuss how the four ngo roles might be associated with outcomes of participatory processes. the framework acknowledges the complex, sometimes limited, contribution of ngos to participatory processes and suggests practical implications.
8. title: growing up nonprofit: predictors of early-stage nonprofit formalization
authors: elizabeth a. m. searing, jesse d. lecy
abstract: the nonprofit organizational life cycle literature has traditionally focused on the entry and exit processes; the intermediate organizational life stages between these bookends have received less attention. almost half of all nonprofits at any given time operate in an early life stage with less than us$100,000 in revenue, minimal overhead spending, and no paid managers. this study examines the process by which nonprofits leave the small, informal, startup phase and begin the next life stage characterized by growth and formalization. we identify financial and organizational characteristics that predict whether the nonprofit will successfully transition out of the early and informal life stage. we find that investments in professional fundraising and access to government funds are predictive of the transition out of the start-up phase, while traditional financial predictors such as revenue concentration, equity ratio, fixed cost ratios, and the accumulation of unrestricted assets have modest to no effects.
